Students are able to use network printers on the wired ResNet network to print from their devices remotely.  Here is the procedure:

  1. Register the MAC address of the printer's Ethernet port to a ResNet port.  At this time, this can be done via the registration portal at “http://register.network.utexas.edu” or by submitting a ticket to the UT Service Desk, or by calling 512-475-9400. The MAC address is usually printed on outside of the printer and has the format "A1:B2:C3:D4:E5:F6".  Consult the device's documentation for assistance locating its MAC address.
  2. Once registered, locate the printer's IP address. The printer will be able to display its IP address in its interface, and it will be formatted "128.83.134.250"  Consult the device's documentation for assistance locating its IP address.
  3. On the computer, connect to "utexas" wi-fi or another ResNet port.  Follow the device's operating system instructions for adding a printer using its IP address. The protocol used must be "Line Printer Daemon" or LDP.  The printer queue, name, location, and other settings can be set by the user and will not affect print functionality.

Once added, the printer will be accessible any time the computer is on "utexas" wifi or ResNet wired Internet.

Note: Connecting a printer via wi-fi is not supported.
