DNS (Domain Name System) is the system computers use to locate each other across a network and/or the Internet. DNS is the Internet's equivalent of a phone book. DNS servers maintain a directory of domain names and translates those (host) names to Internet Protocol (IP) addresses in the same way a phone book translates individual names to phone numbers.
