As of March 14th, 2016, the university's VPN service is protected by Duo's two factor authentication system. With this extra security layer, a user will be able to use a mobile device, landline phone, or hardware token, along with their UT EID and password, to identify themselves to the VPN.

Why is this happening?

The University of Texas System is requiring that all individuals who log on to remote access gateways, such as the campus VPN, connect to the university network with a two factor authentication system. This is a measure to prevent security incidents because criminals have devised sophisticated schemes for stealing people's logon credentials and using them to commit crimes.

Having a second factor authentication will ensure that even if UT EID credentials are compromised, without access to the second factor device the criminal will be unable to access any account information.
