Creating a Mailing List

To own a mailing list, you must have an email address in the utexas.edu domain. If you have an appropriate email address:

  1. Log on to UT Lists and select Create List.
  2. Enter the name you want for the list. List names must follow these rules:
    • List names must be all lowercase.
    • The first character of the list name must be a letter or number.
    • The rest of the list name can contain letters, numbers, dashes (-), periods (.), plus signs (+), and underscores ( _ ).
    • The list name cannot have spaces.
  3. Choose the list type most appropriate for your type of list (types listed below).
  4. Enter the Subject of the list, and choose an appropriate Audience for the list.
  5. Add a short description of your list, and then click Submit your creation request

List Types

  • Confidential list setup
    • No subscription / unsubscription: only the list owner can add members
    • private archives
    • list visible to list members only
    • Only list members can send messages. OTHER ARE SILENTLY REJECTED.
      replies go to both list and sender unless Reply-To: set in message headers
  • Public discussion mailing list
    • public archives
    • only subscribers can post
    • replies go to both list and sender
  • Hotline mailing list
    • everyone can post
    • private archives
    • controlled subscription
    • replies go to both list and sender
  • Mailing list configuration to be used for a news letter providing both text plain and HTML formats
    • public and moderated list
    • subscribers emails are protected
    • default reception format is HTML
    • replies go to both list and sender
  • Mailing list configuration to be used for a news letter
    • public and moderated list
    • subscribers emails are protected
    • replies go to both list and sender
  • Private working group setup
    • only subscribers can post
    • private archives
    • controlled subscription
    • replies go to both list and sender unless Reply-To: set in message headers
  • Web forum ML
    • Messages can either be read via email (subscription) or via the web (web archives)
    • replies go to both list and sender unless Reply-To: set in message header
