The UT Service Desk regularly receives reports of emails requesting information about EID passwords and utexas email accounts. If you have received such an email regarding your EID or utexas email account that requests your username and password, this is a phishing scam.

Phishing is an offense in which criminals attempt to steal personal information through seemingly official email messages. See below for a phishing email example. If you have any concerns about whether an email is valid, contact the UT Service Desk.

Note: The University of Texas and ITS will NEVER ask you for your password.

  • Do NOT respond to the email or provide any identifying information. These attempts will try to exploit your trust by appearing legitimate and could lead to another page that asks for your EID credentials.

  • Delete the message without clicking any links in the email or responding to the email in any way. You can also report the message by forwarding it to
postmaster@utexas.edu or security@utexas.edu before deleting it.

  • Change your password. If you have responded to a phishing email and fear that you may have compromised the security of a non-university account, log on to the website of the organization that maintains the account and change your password immediately. Contact the organization directly if you have any trouble.

  • Clean your computer of possible spyware.

Phishing Email Example

This is only an example. A phishing email could appear different from what is shown below, but regardless of how it looks, it will try to exploit your trust by appearing to be a legitimate email from a trusted organization.
