  • Application: Outlook 2013/2016 (Windows) and Outlook Web App

Some deleted messages can be restored even after you have emptied your Deleted Items folder. This procedure only works in Outlook for Windows and Outlook Web App (OWA) in currently-supported versions of Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, and Chrome.

You cannot recover deleted items using OWA Light, Outlook for macOS, or other email clients.

Outlook 2013/2016 (Windows)

  1. Open Outlook.

  2. In the folder list in the left-hand side of the window, select your Deleted Items folder.

  3. From the ribbon menu, select the Home tab, then click Recover Deleted Items from Server.

  4. Use the resulting window to search for the desired items and select the items you wish to restore.

Tip: To select multiple items, press Ctrl as you click each item

  5. Select Restore Selected Items, then click OK.

Outlook Web App (all operating systems)

  1. Sign into the Outlook Web App. Do NOT select the "Use Outlook Web App Light" option when logging in.

  2. In the folder list on the left-hand side of the browser window, right-click (ctrl-click if using macOS) on Deleted Items.

  3. From the resulting pop-up menu, select Recover Deleted Items.

  4. Use the resulting window to search for the desired items and select the items you wish to restore.

  5. Click Recover.
