Estimated cable installation costs are given below for placing Cat5e plenum twisted-pair structured voice & data cabling for each building on The University of Texas at Austin main campus and the J.J. Pickle Research Campus; these prices are only for estimating purposes – for a more accurate estimate, please contact the Cabling & Construction group (ITS-Cabling-Construction@utlists.utexas.edu). Each building has been assigned a category based on the building's construction characteristics; if you do not see your building listed in the cost estimator, please send a message to nt@its.utexas.edu. Note: Estimated costs for CAT6A cabling utilizes the chart below plus an added adjustment charge of $83.17 per cable.

When installing twisted-pair structured cabling at UT, the telecommunications industry best practices are used. The UT ITS Engineering & Construction Telecom Cable Installer Guidelines for Twisted-Pair Cabling outlines the minimum requirements for twisted-pair cabling installation on The University of Texas at Austin. Cabling installation at the University meets the more stringent requirements of the current editions of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA). NEC requires the removal of abandoned cable which is provided at an additional charge. Per Network Operations Manual 6.9.3.2 Building Cable Pathways:

Media cabling through building pathways shall only be installed or modified by ITS Networking and approved contractors. Contractors must be vetted and approved by ITS Networking, follow university building codes and standards, and adhere to ITS Networking’s inspections. ITS Networking may approve Unit staff to install specialized media with proper training and post-installation inspections.

Once again, these costs are for estimating purposes only. Please contact the ITS Business Office at (512) 471-5800 to request a specific work estimate. For UT Systems OFPC, UT PMCS or FS projects please contact our Facilities Design (FD) staff at (512) 232-0843. Small scope work estimates will be provided at no charge to the requestor. Estimates requiring extended time, site surveys, engineering (PE), research, vendor proposals, or materials/drawings to create (Design Estimates) will be charged to the customer on a labor/materials basis. The requestor will be notified that an account number will need to be provided to our Business Office for the Design Estimate charges prior to the estimate being prepared.

When you receive an estimate, please note that:

Estimates include cable installation plus any additional labor or materials required to satisfactorily complete the installation.
Estimates are valid for thirty (30) days following issue. Should you wish to reconsider a project at a later date, we will review and revise the estimate and timeline to reflect current conditions.
Estimates reflect present knowledge of existing conditions. Unforeseen conditions, such as the need for asbestos abatement, or overcoming previously unknown construction obstacles, can significantly affect project costs and timeline estimates.
Approved estimates should be returned to the ITS Business Office along with work requests, appropriate written authorizations, and valid account numbers. Once these are received, ITS will begin work in accordance with the agreed-upon schedule. These estimated prices are effective until August 31, 2025.
Additional charges NOT included in a Labor & Material estimated cable installation cost are Lead & Asbestos identification and abatement. ITS will contact EHS and PMCS to coordinate this work and bill these additional charges as part of the cabling bill. The UT Environmental Health and Safety Office (EHS) requires verification for lead & asbestos containing materials prior to any cabling work disturbance or wall penetrations occurring on UT property (Asbestos & Lead Assessment Request). This may require sampling of the materials in each work area affected to determine if asbestos or lead is present. If asbestos or lead are present, asbestos/lead-certified personnel must perform the installation work. Work by asbestos/lead-certified personnel is charged on a labor/material basis.
External customers (non-UT) may be subject to sales tax and a 26.5% institutional charge.

Cabling/Wiring Estimated Costs

Example one: Two (2) data cables in POB (Building Category D)

$292 each x 2 = $584 cables plus $46 trip charge = $630 (EHS sampling and asbestos abatement is included on a Prepaid work order)

Example two: 25 data cables and five (5) voice cables in FAC (Building Category A)

$237 each x 30 (25 data plus 5 voice) = $7,110 cables plus $46 trip charge = $7,1,56 (EHS sampling and asbestos abatement is included on a Prepaid work order)

Example three: One (1) CAT6A cable in ACB (Building Category D)

$292 each x 1 = $292 plus CAT6A Adjustment of $83.17 = $375.17 plus $46 trip charge = $421.17 (EHS sampling and asbestos abatement is included on a Prepaid work order)
